Taxonomic Prediction of Arenas

In the absence of guidance from the literature, it seems reasonable to expect the Q-expansion of the Change Domain to contain Arenas for Fitting In. The identification of those arenas can be predicted using principles derived from the other Domains i.e. by considering the primal need and psychosocial pressure of the corresponding Root Level.

This topic is a prediction. In the main section, the Arenas will be developed from the depiction paradigms. In what follows, the relevant paradigm that grounds the Arena will be suggested.

The RL1-Action domain has a need for achievement and is subject to a performance pressure.

Broadly speaking, achievement is pursued via projects, and all social groups have projects pursued by a smaller or larger team. Projects involve numbers of people interacting with each other and the environment and using resources to deliver a mission. So the dynamic paradigm could be expected to determine this Arena.

If a person joins a project, then they must fit in—fitting in means contributing to performance:  so this could be the Q1-Arena.

The RL2-Inquiry domain has a need for knowledge and is subject to a certainty pressure.

Broadly speaking, knowledge is required to discover a person who will assist you in pursuing your goals and then develop a relationship. You pursue your own goals independently and autonomously, so the atomistic paradigm could be expected to determine this Arena.

If a person engages in a relation for instrumental reasons, they must fit in with the other person—fitting in involves becoming certain and realistic about what can be expected: so this could be the Q2-Arena.

The RL3-Change domain has a need for fitness and is subject to an acceptability pressure.

Broadly speaking, fitness and acceptability are critical for proposals because proposals are precursors to change. If you bring a proposal to deal with an emergent need, you have cause to do so. Proposals require analyses and demand consensus, so the causal paradigm could be expected to determine this Arena.

If a person brings a proposal, they must ensure both that it is fit for purpose and that it is acceptable to the group: so this could be the Q3-Arena.

The RL4-Experience domain has a need for individuality and is subject to a well-being pressure.

Broadly speaking, individuality comes into play when a group experiences entrenched conflict that forces taking sides. Conflicts like this can occur in any social group and these generate arguments, turmoil and often schisms. So the dualistic paradigm could be expected to determine this Arena.

If a person is in a group experiencing divisive conflict, they must find a way to fit in without splitting the group—fitting in involves becoming comfortable with the division: so this could be the Q4-Arena.

The RL5-Communication domain has a need for association and is subject to an understanding pressure.

Broadly speaking, association leads one to be engaged with social systems developed by the group. All social groups require members to use their systems, but they are complicated, bureaucratic, and it takes an effort to understand them. So the unified paradigm could be expected to determine this Arena.

If a person uses a social system, they must fit in with it—fitting in involves understanding its complexity: so this could be the Q5-Arena.

The RL6-Purpose domain has a need for governance and is subject to an autonomy pressure.

Broadly speaking, governance determines the social structure of a group and its component roles. Roles determine social identity and functioning within the structure, so the structural paradigm could be expected to determine this Arena.

If a person adopts a role, they must fit in with it—fitting in means being able to operate in role autonomously, not slavishly: so this could be the Q6-Arena.

The RL7-Willingness domain has a need for effectiveness and is subject to a selflessness pressure.

Broadly speaking, being effective requires the use of cultural conventions to prevent pointless arguments and emotional disturbance. All social groups have a culture that provides members with stability and comfort. Culture calls for conformity and uniformity, so the unitary paradigm could be expected to determine this Arena.

If a person enters a culture, they must fit in with it—fitting in means adapting to the culture and subjugating personal habits, views and preferences: so this could be the Q7-Arena.

Having completed this preliminary identification of the Q-Arenas in the Change domain, we can investigate in more detail.
