Comparison of PH'• Unfolding Dualities

Findings

The unfolding dualities in each of the 7 Principal Typologies have a basic similarity as explained in the Hub. But that followed just a few early discoveries. The present investigation reviewed and re-analysed those earlier formulations and drew on more recent studies. Formulating and presenting each unfolding process in a standardized fashion allowed similarities and differences to be clarified. As a result, prior formulations have been amended in places.

Below is a table showing the currently proposed overall dialectic for the Principal Typology in each Primary Domain.

Domain Principal Typology Methods Dialectic Duality
RL7/PH7: Willingness Capability Enhancement Affirmation v Dissatisfaction
RL6/PH6: Purpose Ethical Choice Aspiration v Constraint
RL5/PH5: Communication Language Use Signification v Sophistication
RL4/PH4: Experience Stabilization Core v Growth
RL3/PH3: Change Depiction Configuration v Complexification
RL2/PH2: Inquiry Research Representation v Criticism
RL1/PH1: Action Decision Resolution v Questioning

The unfolding process can be explained in each case using the thesis + antithesis at one level synthesis, which is the thesis at the next higher level. This formula suggests a continuity amongst the Types even though Types can be operated independently of each other.

In procedural terms, Types are incompatible and incommensurable, even if values within methods are compatible—which is the basis of the Spiral structures.

An exception to the Type discontinuity principle has now been identified in Q-expansions, where adjacent Types can be combined after being developed using a 4-level style hierarchy for each Type. The continuity identified here using a dialectical argument may be what enables or at least supports Q-expansions.

Decision: RL1-Action Domain

The PH'1 unfolding duality is based on each method enabling a resolution which can be developed by a characteristic questioning, each pole being viable in its own right.

This results in social disputes and polarization in practice. Fusion of the dialectic poles does not occur.

Method Polarization in Practice
L'7: Imaginist The Visionary v The Counsellor
L'6: Structuralist The Bureaucrat v The Reorganizer
L'5: Systemicist The Strategist v The Modeller
L'4: Dialectic The Broker v The Mediator
L'3: Pragmatist The Satisficer v The Dynamo
L'2: Empiricist The Analyst v The Experimenter
L'1: Rationalist The Designer v The Evaluator

Research: RL2-Inquiry Domain

The PH'2 unfolding duality is based on each method producing a representation which can be developed by a characteristic criticism, each pole being viable in its own right.

This results in polarization evident in social interchanges and often appearing as intra-psychic conflicts that must be tolerated. Fusion of the dialectic poles is required for the most sophisticated use of the methods.

Method Polarization in Practice Fusion
in a Rigorous Researcher
L'7: Contemplative The Contemplative
v The Naysayer
Internal naysaying so that only what truly illuminates is revealed.
L'6: Formal The Formalist
v The Challenger
Ensuring consistency, coherence and reasonable justifications.
L'5: Holistic The Modeller
v The User
Recursive model development constantly checked against use.
L'4: Dialectic The Polarizer
v The Reconciler
Sharp awareness with options for reconciliation taken seriously.
L'3: Explanatory The Hypothesizer
v The Falsifier
Use of null-hypotheses and alternative hypotheses.
L'2: Analytic The Analyst
v The Doubter
Intelligent self-critical scepticism,
L'1: Empirical The Observer
v The Validator
Methodologically sound design,

Depiction: RL3-Change Domain

The PH'3 unfolding duality is based on each method revealing a configuration that can be developed by a characteristic complexification, each pole being viable in its own right.

This results in polarized identities and doctrine-based practices. The polarized identities produce theoretical controversies and disputes about what is more suitable in the situation. More sophisticated actors promote and apply specific doctrine-based practices derived from fusing what is valuable in the two identities.

Method Polarization in Practice Doctrine-based
Practices
L'7: Unitary The Totalist v The Dominator Benign paternalism
L'6: Structural The Schematist v The Functionary Adjustable functionalism
L'5: Unified The Ecologist v The Visionary Ecological emergentism
L'4: Dualistic The Dichotomist v The Partisan Regulated adversarialism
L'3: Causal The Predictor v The Multifactorialist Statistical determinism
L'2: Atomistic The Particle v The Individual Egalitarian individualism
L'1: Dynamic The Systemicist v The Insider Participative systemicism

Stabilization: RL4-Experience Domain

The PH'4 unfolding duality is based on each method forming a core to permit existence (continued functioning) and possessing a force for growth —both of which invite therapeutic intervention to restore or repair functioning that allows daily existence.

How the two polarized forms coexist varies from level to level and depends on the context. The core-growth duality gives rise to polarized therapies and perennial controversies, as well as social polarization from L'3 upwards.

Cores can be false from L'3 to L'6, and then they do not stabilize.

Method Polarization in Culture Polarization in Therapies
L'7: Transpersonal Immanence v Transcendence
of the divine.
Controversy: Is God utterly other or ultimately identical with man and nature?

Therapy either focuses on the soul within or on a distant God.

In mystical traditions, both poles can be fused.

L'6: Social Ascription v Achievement
in determining social standing.
Controversy: Are choices contingent on roles or on situations?

Therapy either focuses on role play or on putting the person into situations.

Existential therapies develop authentic role performance within situations.

L'5: Relational Collectivism v Individualism
in daily living.
Controversy: Are personal choices the product of the group or of the individual?

Therapy takes place either in groups or one-to-one.

Bowen's method aimed for self-differentiation in the context of the family.

L'4: Individual Independence v Interdependence
in self-construal.
Controversy: Does a person have a self in their own right or is it constituted by others?

Therapy either focuses on self-relations or object-relations.

Winnicott's approach emphasized both self and the maternal context.

L'3: Emotional Somatization v Mentalization
in response to distress.
Controversy: Mind-Body.
But for most,Closedemotions are felt simultaneously in the mind and in the body.

Therapy either focuses on bodily states or on mental states.

Gendlin's focusing therapy uses both poles.

Below: the core is provided by the organism: culture is not relevant and deliberate fusion is not possible.
L'2: Vital

Controversy: Is dream imagery biological or does it symbolize?

Therapy is based on either instinctual or symbolic functioning.
L'1: Sensory Controversy: Is sensation passive reception or an active brain process? Therapy is based on either receptivity or generation of activity.

Language Use: RL5-Communication Domain

The PH'5 unfolding duality is based on each method permitting signification and a counterpart that is a force for sophistication of the language in use.

Fusion of the two forms is impossible so their existence results in controversy, sometimes a paradigm war, about which pole is more suitable either for a person, for a business or to meet a social need. There may be rivalry between protagonists adhering to opposing poles.

Method Polarization in Practice Perennial Controversy
L'7: Mythic Prophetic proclamation v Priestly sermon Direct revelation v Authorized interpretation
L'6: Logical Piecemeal logic v Metaphysical system Analytic Philosophy v Continental Philosophy
L'5: Gestalt Great art v Art criticism Against interpretation v For interpretation
L'4: Universal Regular journalism v Investigative journalism Shared convention v Fresh expression
L'3: Conceptual Specialist jargon v Social communication The Purist v The Popularizer
L'2: Associative Insider talk v Outsider inclusion Valid code v Deficient code
L'1: Concrete Standard manual v Customized instruction Direct instruction v Discovery learning

Ethical Choice: RL6-Purpose Domain

The PH'6 unfolding duality is based on each method possessing an aspiration that finds itself forced to develop via a constraint.

For every method, both forms of ethical choice turn out to be deficient in practice and a satisfactory ethical choice requires their reconciliation. This is possible by respecting the ethical injunction and exercising the virtue, which are characteristics of the particular approach.

What is visible in practice are polarized disputes between two deficient positions, and an evident requirement for their reconciliation.

Method Polarization in Practice Reconciliation Mentality
L'7: Transcendentalist The Seeker v The Worldly-wise Authentic integrity
L'6: Legitimist The Rule-setter v The Libertarian Liberal constitutionalism
L'5: Communalist The Altruist v The Egoist Enlightened self-interest
L'4: Individualist The Fighter v The Appeaser Diplomatic self-assertion
L'3: Pluralist The Idealist v The Pragmatist Pragmatic idealism
L'2: Conventionalist The Traditionalist v The Activist Progressive conservative
L'1: Rationalist The Technocrat v The Politician Realistic wise reformer

Capability Enhancement: RL7-Willingness Domain

The unfolding duality has not yet been formally determined.

L'5: Experimentation
L'4: Affiliation
L'3: Preoccupation
L'2: Elucidation
