Interacting Responsibly

Your Starting Position

Serving self-interest must be taken as the foundation of every person's persona. As explained in the investigation of ethical choice, each person must be responsible for himself or herself. That is the essence of individualist ethical choice (PH'6L4).

Reminder:Closed The core obligation of individualist choice is to ensure the chooser's security and interests in the light of existing power relations. For details see Ch.6 in Working with Values.

Self-interest can be enlightened rather than purely self-serving, that is to say it can seek benefit for others while also serving your own interests—but this takes inner strength.

In relation to the persona presented by another, it is always wise to ask what is in it for them. In relation to yourself, it is wise to realize that others will look at you in the same way.

Taking Responsibility

GL1 GL2

In order to serve self-interest-G1B you will inevitably enter into a variety of commitments which carry a degree of risk-G2B.

To serve your self-interest, you will find yourself internally driven to take risks. But those risks will be organized to reduce your exposure to excessive losses or personal harm.

Looked at the other way, entering on risky commitments will similarly compel you to ensure that your self-interest is being served.

Those who fail to take everyday risks-G2 like selling themselves, finding associates, or finding their path in life are said to «lack drive».

So GL1B GL2B is provisionally labelled Drive.

Your persona will be viewed as a self-starter, marked by initiative and drive.

Advancing Yourself Responsibly

GL3 GL1

In order to serve your own interests, you will find yourself periodically needing to contest, fight, defend and argue your case in public settings—or face a serious setback and at the extreme if this is repeated become viewed as a «loser». If however, it is overdone, then you will be viewed as self-aggrandizing or narcissistic.

As explained, this exposure-G3 calls for daring and there are potentially two influences from serving self-interest-G1B.

Serving your self-interest-G1B requires you to enter contests-G3P that you believe are important, and that you have some chance of winning. To win, there must be an inner passion for the issue, but entering does not necessarily mean needing to win. It may be necessary to enter to establish your interest in the matter and to present yourself to the world as a contender who has to be recognized in the future. In all cases, you are promoting yourself.

Entering contests advances your interests, otherwise you would not bother to engage with the issue.

So GL1B GL3P is provisionally labelled Promotion.

Your persona will be marked by pushing yourself forward i.e. self-advancement and a willingness to self-promote when needed.

Serving your self-interest-G1B inevitably generates public exposure-G3S. Given the diversity of views in wider society, caution is called for in any initiative or communication. Above all, self-interested activity must not lead to humiliation.

In handling any public exposure, and that may develop in a myriad of ways, you must be careful not to harm your own interests.

So GL1B GL3S is provisionally labelled Caution.

Your persona will be marked by circumspection with concern for how you come across to others.

GL3 GL2

Exposure-G3 is almost inevitable when committing and organizing the associated risks-G2.

When you are thinking about a risky commitment (G2B), you must consider the personal confrontations and debates that will emerge and cannot be avoided (G3P). You have to ask yourself whether you are likely to win out, whether it is worth it even if you do win, and whether it is worth it if you lose.

When you enter any personal contest you calculate the risks that you will be running by exposing yourself in that way.

So GL2B GL3P is provisionally labelled Calculation.

Your persona will be marked by a calculating or strategizing approach to picking your battles.

Organized risk-taking-G2B should take into account any ensuing public exposure-G3S and prepare for its handling to ensure a positive response if possible and minimize and potential harm or humiliation. It works both ways: exposure forces risk-taking to be prepared and risk-taking forces handling of exposure to be prepared.

So GL2B GL3S is provisionally labelled Preparedness.

Your persona will be marked by composure and poise, making you hard to blind-side or catch off-guard.

GL3 GL3

As proposed earlier, the two GL3-ExposureCentres are linked because each dares the other. Both allow interactions to be oriented G1-self-interestand satisfactory G2-risk-taking.

GL3P GL3S is provisionally labelled Daring.

Your persona will be marked by boldness, as you take on contests and stand the heat.

Securing your Position Responsibly

The heart of ego-based psychosocial interaction is to be found in exchanges with others. How you manage those exchanges will determine how others view you, more so than anything else—simply because they want to interact and have to cope with how you present yourself in the process of exchanges.

GL4 GL1

Your management of exchanges cannot directly influence how you serve your self-interest because it has to be mediated both by your commitments and the risks you are willing to take, and by your readiness to expose yourself to everyday battles for survival and dominance.

GL4 GL2

Managing exchanges-G4B uses the work put in to organising risk-taking-G2B ensuring that interactions flow smoothly and politely with upsets or surprises minimized. Conversely, the work put into managing exchanges effectively, helps in organizing commitments and taking of risks in a suitable fashion. Each is able to stabilize the other.

So GL4B GL2B is provisionally labelled Stabilization.

Your persona will be marked by steadiness.

GL4 GL3

Entering a contest reveals exactly where you stand and this will be noticed when you are involved in exchanges.

Your management of exchanges provides you with a relevant social context and positions you when you enter contests.

So GL4B GL3P is provisionally labelled Positioning.

Your persona will be marked by being well-positioned.

The way you handle your public exposure creates expectations for how you will manage exchanges, which are always public to some degree.

Your management of exchanges creates expectations of how you will handle your public exposure.

So GL4B GL3S is provisionally labelled Expectation.

Your persona will be marked by assurance.
