Unfolding Dualities and Pressures in Typologies
A Natural Relationship
The unfolding dualities in Typologies are explicitly developmental and cyclic, and they must surely link to developmental sequence that has become evident in the psychosocial pressures.
In the unfolding dialectic, the thesis is the essence of the method and it emerges the moment a method is used. It has now been found that the essence of any method is generated by the 1° pressure.
The antithesis is the developmental force that typically arises in association with use of the method. The use of any method has been found to be generated by the 2° pressure.
The combination of the dialectic and the pressures for each Principal Typology is laid out below. Links are provided to assist in checking the propositions.
A Proposed Process
For any particular Type, the 1° pressure supports the method's thesis because that thesis constitutes the Type's essence and existence.
During use of that method, the 2° pressure becomes spontaneously operative without necessarily activating the antithesis.
The antithesis may be activated by intellectual reflection, through exigencies of everyday use and accompanying social criticism, or by a positive desire to improve or develop the method.
An activated antithesis, regardless of its origin, will always depend on the drive provided by the 2° pressure.
As that drive intensifies and the antithesis receives increasing attention, a tension develops with the thesis. Sometimes the two poles can be combined to get the best of both, but often that is impossible—see examples here—and that results in evident social polarization and public controversy.
Nevertheless, the tension can be resolved theoretically, and sometimes actually, via a synthesis that constitutes the thesis of the Type at the next level up.
Because such a synthesis depends crucially on the previous 2° pressure for its formation and maintenance, that drive becomes the new 1° pressure driving the new thesis.
This process repeats itself at each level of the Typology until the synthesis and 2° pressure at L'7 becomes the thesis and 1°pressure at L'1, completing the cycle.
