The explanations for 1° pressures are different from those originally provided in the Architecture Room, but the findings are fully consistent in each Type. The 2° pressure propositions are completely new, so a full check on alternatives is provided.

L'1-Sensory

The 1° pressure is Autonomy which stabilizes functioning by driving a person to construct and regulate their own socio-physical milieu in their own way. The person is free to choose the contacts, circles, contacts, occasions, stimuli and pleasures that allow a sense of being themselves.

The 2° pressure is Certainty which drives repeated use of dependable familiar positive interactions and safe sensory gratifications. Regularity, predictability and fulfilled expectations lets stimulation relieve tension and restore inner equilibrium.

2° Alternatives: Performance is not the purpose. Understanding is unnecessary. Acceptability sets up the situation but does not drive it. Well-being is a desired effect but does not govern use of the method. Selflessness is unnecessary because exchanges are reciprocal and personally gratifying. Autonomy functions as the 1° pressure.

L'2-Vital

The 1° pressure is Certainty which stabilizes functioning by driving a person to anchor identity in directly verifiable reality of bodily structures and physiological functions, which are unambiguous and dependable. This then provides for fitness, strength, and coordination.

The 2° pressure is Performance which drives disciplined regular, controlled activities. Exercise, sport, posture and movement must be performed correctly, safely and with concentration. The performance drive produces tangible self-fulfilling results: fitness, coordination, strength, endurance, energy and vitality.

2° Alternatives: Acceptability is irrelevant. Well-being is a desired after-effect but does not govern use of the method. Understanding and selflessness are unnecessary. Autonomy is experienced but is not the driver. Certainty functions as the 1° pressure.

L'3-Emotional

The 1° pressure is Performance which stabilizes functioning by driving emotions to perform services for oneself and others. Feelings then create attachments, generate complementary emotional roles, activate care-giving, and communicate needs. Emotional states need to be expressed, modified, relocated or contained. Poor performance includes dumping, splitting, manipulating, and projecting emotions.

The 2° pressure is Understanding which drives recognition and interpretation of feelings—their quality, origin, meaning and impact. Feelings arising in interactions have to be understood and may need to be worked out with the other person. Understanding enables mastering emotions rather than reacting, suppressing or evacuating them impulsively.

2° Alternatives: Certainty is unsuitable due to the fluidity of emotions. Acceptability can never be assumed or prioritized. Well-being is dangerous because it can leads to dysfunctional rejection of painful feelings. Autonomy is constrained by the peremptoriness of emotions. Selflessness is inappropriate. Performance functions as the 1° pressure.

L'4-Individual

The 1° pressure is Understanding which stabilizes existence by driving formation of an intelligible conception of the self, one that provides continuity, boundaries and organization of experiences. For a genuine self, a person must understand their own wishes, memories, tendencies, strengths, limitations and biases.

The 2° pressure is Acceptability which drives self-acceptance and the search for respect and acceptance by others. The person must present themselves, assert entitlements, negotiate differences and adapt sufficiently for social life. A personally satisfactory and socially viable position stabilizes functioning.

2° Alternatives: Performance is supportive but not primary. Certainty does not seem relevant for stabilization. Autonomy and well-being are supported as a consequence rather than being drivers. Selflessness is not prominent given the focus on a self. Understanding functions as the 1° pressure.

L'5-Relational

The 1° pressure is Acceptability which stabilizes existence by driving development of a bond that both parties value and willingly sustain. This bond requires each person to accepts the other’s individuality and make adjustments as circumstances and wishes change. Rejection or coercion destroys relational requirements and therefore destabilizes.

The 2° pressure is Selflessness which drives attunement to the other person’s nature, needs and wishes. Personal assumptions and immediate self-interest get set aside in order to intuit the other’s viewpoint and engage in genuine dialogue. Selflessness leads to offering gratification or help even where it seems unnecessary, irrational or even unfair. It also drives forgiveness and efforts to repair any harm caused.

2° Alternatives: Performance and certainty are not relevant. Autonomy is operative but does not drive cultivation of relationships. Well-being and understanding are both used for desired outcomes without being drivers of the method. Acceptability functions as the 1° pressure.

L'6-Social

The 1° pressure is Selflessness which stabilizes existence by driving an identification with a community and its groups, institutions, roles, shared values. The person subordinates purely personal preferences to function in role and follow rules so as to serve the group and the common good.

The 2° pressure is Well-Being which drives purposeful participation in a social setting that feels worthwhile. A suitable role gratifies through belonging, recognition, responsibility and personal fulfilment. If a legitimate place in communal life is unavailable, then aimlessness, alienation and social isolation develop and cause destabilization.

2° Alternatives: Performance and certainty do not in themselves stabilize. Acceptability is insufficient. Autonomyis potentially counter-productive. Understandingassists without being primary.Selflessness functions as the 1° pressure.

L'7-Transpersonal

The 1° pressure is Well-Being which stabilizes existence by driving a desire for spiritual harmony and ultimate belonging within the universe. Union with humanity, the Cosmos, God or the void promises serenity, hope and freedom from ego-based distress. Correspondingly, failure is experienced as meaninglessness, anguish, despair, spiritual torment or a “sickness of the soul.”

The 2° pressure is Autonomy which drives the use of faith and independently sustenance of spiritual practices. The person must decide what truly matters, handle mental states accordingly, disregard distracting or supposedly unreal experiences, and follow an inner guidance even in the face of disapproval or rejection. Contemplation, meditation and related disciplines require personal determination and self-mastery.

2° Alternatives: Performance is not relevant. Certainty is inappropriate. Acceptability is subordinate or irrelevant. Understanding is does not govern stabilization. Selflessness is proclaimed but does not drive use of the method. Well-Being functions as the 1° pressure.

L'1-Concrete

The 1° pressure is Autonomy which drives a person to find their own way to organize and formulate the steps in some practical task, even if within overarching rules and policies, so as to provide others with an authoritative account of what to do and how to do it.

The 2° pressure is Certainty which drives the communicator to produce an account of a procedure to be followed, including every necessary detail and removing all ambiguity and inaccuracy, so that it can be completely relied upon as a correct guide to performance.

2° Alternatives: Performance and understanding do not drive formulation. Acceptability is relevant but not dominant. Well-being is not relevant. Selflessness is subsidiary because ownership is important. Autonomy functions as the 1° pressure.

Autonomy drives authorship & Certainty drives its reliability.

L'2-Associative

The 1° pressure is Certainty which drives seemingly vague and allusive communications that carry unambiguous and explicit meanings for insiders who know each other and are familiar with the setting and the issues.

The 2° pressure is Performance which drives the communicator to generate the understanding, effect or actions that are desired.

2° Alternatives: Acceptability supports but does not govern formulations. Well-being is not the driver. Understanding is taken for granted. Autonomy is a factor without determining exchanges. Selflessness is unnecessary because expressions are personal. Certainty functions as the 1° pressure.

Certainty drives meaning & Performance drives effectiveness.

L'3-Conceptual

The 1° pressure is Performance which drives specialists to formulate and agree on definitions of terms suitable for describing, investigating and explaining a field. These concepts organize language and allow communication to remain coherent and consistent over time.

The 2° pressure is Understanding which drives communicators to use the agreed concepts when dealing with issues in the field. As a result, there can be rational debate and systematic correction.

2° Alternatives: Certainty is impractical. Acceptability constrains terms and arguments but does not drive communications. Well-being is irrelevant. Autonomy is inhibited by the need for a communal language. Selflessness may be supportive but is not dominant. Performance functions as the 1° pressure.

Performance establishes a workable language & Understanding drives its use.

L'4-Universal

The 1° pressure is Understanding which drives the communicator to keep communications simple and formulated with conventions and clichès that are habitually used. The sense of understanding does not entail actual understanding.

The 2° pressure is Acceptability which drives the communicator to take account of sentiment and sensitivities. The goal is to capture interest, resonate with the recipient, and avoid offence—often to enable persuasion.

2° Alternatives: Performance may be sought but that does not drive formulation. Certainty is unnecessary. Well-being does not need to be a driver. Autonomy is constrained by the social setting. Selflessness is unlikely given the presence of bias and self-interest. Understanding functions as the 1° pressure.

Understanding ensures social intelligibility & Acceptability makes it influential.

L'5-Gestalt

The 1° pressure is Acceptability which drives the communicator to reach and touch as many people as possible when formulating a complex human situation. The communication needs to resonate across diverse recipients, so anything interfering with that process must be removed.

The 2° pressure is Selflessness which drives the communicator to become a vehicle serving the creative project and its experiential truth. Personal interests and desires for popularity must be set aside

2° Alternatives: Performance does not drive formulation even if an effect must be achieved. Certainty is inappropriate where nuance is natural. Well-being would often be counter-productive. Understanding is pertinent but does not govern expression. Autonomy sets up projects but does not drive them. Acceptability functions as the 1° pressure.

Acceptability ensures reaching and touching people & Selflessness ensures fidelity to the human reality.

L'6-Logical

The 1° pressure is Selflessness which drives the communicator to set aside personal preferences, biases and feelings in order to formulate fundamental principles that apply impartially across persons, cultures and circumstances. This ensures expression is direct, impersonal and transparent.

The 2° pressure is Well-Being which drives the communicator to formulate fundamentals when their curiosity is piqued or their confusion becomes tolerable. Formulating principles, eliminating inconsistencies and recognizing logical patterns is only possible if the needed dedication and concentration are intrinsically gratifying.

2° Alternatives: Performance is not a driver. Certainty must not become dominant to avoid premature closure. Acceptability and autonomy would be counter-productive. Understanding is a desired effect but does not govern use of the method . Selflessness functions as the 1° pressure.

Selflessness ensures universality & Well-Being ensures dedication.

L'7-Mythic

The 1° pressure is Well-Being which drives the communicator to transcend the limitations of mundane reality by expressing unknowable and fantastical matters within an imaginative divine cosmos. By reference to angelic powers, the eternal struggle between good and evil, and invented creatures and locations, mythic language may be a relief or escapist for the author and need not promote anyone's well-being.

1° Alternatives: Performance may seek a powerful effect but does not generate the need to transcend mundane reality. Certainty cannot provide access to unknowable matters. Acceptability may encourage familiar myths but does not generate a divine cosmos. Understanding seeks intelligibility rather than transcendence. Selflessness is unnecessary because mythic language may serve the communicator’s personal needs. Autonomy liberates the imagination and functions as the 2° pressure.

The 2° pressure is Autonomy which drives the communicator to create and use their own imaginative conceptions of divine realms, cosmic mysteries and the representations of good and evil without the restraints of logic or social convention.

2° Alternatives: Performance does not drive imaginative creation. Certainty is inappropriate for invented images. Acceptability is subordinate to imaginative assertion. Understanding would seek intelligibility and inhibit the mysterious or cryptic. Selflessness would be constraining. Well-Being functions as the 1° pressure.

Well-Being drives transcendence & Autonomy drives imagination.

PH'6: Ethical Choice Methods

L'1-Rationalist

The 1° pressure is Autonomy which drives the chooser to determine and take ownership of the means for resolving an obvious problem and achieving a worthwhile objective within the constraints of social and physical realities.

1° Alternatives: Performance does not drive solutions. Certaintycannot generate solutions. Acceptability may constrain but cannot drive choice. Well-being is irrelevant. Understanding is supportive but not dominant. Selflessness is unnecessary because there is no requirement for personal interests to be set aside.

The 2° pressure is Certainty which drives the chooser to select solutions that can be relied upon to deal effectively with the problem.

2° Alternatives: Performance in finding a solution is not a concern. Acceptability and well-being are irrelevant. Understanding is relevant but does not drive selection. Selflessness is unnecessary. Autonomy functions as the 1° pressure.

Autonomy drives ownership & Certainty drives reliability.

L'2-Conventionalist

The 1° pressure is Certainty which drives the chooser to rely on choices conforming to a well-established body of agreement in the social group on what is right/good or wrong/bad.

1° Alternatives: Performance is irrelevant to what is right. Acceptability characterizes all conventions and does not discriminate. Well-being and selflessness are irrelevant. Understanding is unnecessary because the rules are given. Autonomy would be counter-productive.

The 2° pressure is Performance which drives the chooser to develop and apply that choice directly to the situation.

2° Alternatives: Acceptabilitydoes not lead to realization. Well-being is not the driver. Understanding does not govern use. Autonomy would be counter-productive. Selflessness is unnecessary. Certainty functions as the 1° pressure.

Certainty drives conformity & Performance drives application.

L'3-Pluralist

The 1° pressure is Performance which drives a choice that will likely produce tangible benefit for the chooser's group.

1° Alternatives: Certaintydoes not apply because any benefit will be probable. Acceptability is supportive but not dominant. Well-being does not focus on group benefit. Understanding does not demand benefit. Autonomy could disregard the group's needs. Selflessness is irrelevant because interests are in play.

The 2° pressure is Understanding which drives the development of a choice that aligns with preferred values and is feasible in the situation.

2° Alternatives:Certainty is not practical. Acceptability and well-being influence feasibility but do not determine choice. Autonomy could flout service to the relevant group. Selflessness might suppress relevant interests. Performance functions as the 1° pressure.

Performance drives benefit & Understanding drives suitability.

L'4-Individualist

The 1° pressure is Understanding which drives choosers to appreciate their own strengths and vulnerabilities and properly grasp prevailing power relations before attempting to determine what is really in their own interests.

1° Alternatives: Performance would be premature and even dangerous. Certainty is impossible in a dynamic environment. Acceptability cannot determine self-interest. Well-being may not lead to an advantage. Autonomy supports initiative but does not determine advantage. Selflessness would be counter-productive.

The 2° pressure is Acceptability which drives selection of a choice that both the chooser and powerful figures can accept, even if others may suffer.

2° Alternatives: Performance does not necessarily deliver advantage. Certainty is not possible. Well-being may be a desired effect but the pressure does not drive use of the method. Autonomy could be dangerous. Selflessness is inappropriate. Understanding functions as the 1° pressure.

Understanding drives positioning & Acceptability drives advantage.

L'5 Communalist

The 1° pressure is Acceptability which drives a choice whose consequences are beneficial for the community as a whole based on the members' expressed or likely views and preferences.

1° Alternatives: Performance cannot define overall benefit. Certainty to deal with consequences is impossible. Well-being cannot drive a choice whose focus should be on others. Understanding does not compel concern for others. Autonomy would privilege the chooser. Selflessness is not appropriate because any chooser is a member of the community and so their views matter.

The 2° pressure is Selflessness which drives the chooser to develop a balanced choice by putting their personal interests in the context of community needs and attending to the direct and indirect effects of any choice on all in the community.

2° Alternatives: Performance does not aid balance. Certainty is impossible. Well-being cannot determine balance. Understanding does not compel impartial balancing. Autonomy could lead to an unbalanced choice. Acceptability functions as the 1° pressure.

Acceptability drives inclusion & Selflessness drives balance.

L'6-Legitimist

The 1° pressure is Selflessness which drives the chooser to set aside personal interests and specific circumstances in order to establish a general rule that applies impartially and equally to all in the relevant social group now and into the future.

1° Alternatives: Performance and certainty cannot generate impartiality or equality under the rule. Well-being does not drive rules as a form but only drives particular rules. Acceptability does not generate rules. Understanding does not demand equality under the rule. Autonomy potentially privileges the chooser or allow exceptions.

The 2° pressure is Well-Being which drives the chooser to devise rules that all experience as fair. Unfairness is intensely painful and socially disruptive, while fairness enables the rule to willingly treated as legitimate, as well as providing comfort, safety, trust, and inalienable rights.

2° Alternatives: Performance and certainty are not concerned with fairness. Acceptability sets up the context but does not drive formulation. Understanding can expose effects but does not generate legitimacy. Autonomy is inappropriate. Selflessness functions as the 1° pressure.

Selflessness drives equality & Well-Being drives fairness.

L'7-Transcendentalist

The 1° pressure is Well-Being which drives the chooser towards an inner transpersonal, possibly divine, source that can be completely trusted to provide the necessary guidance.

1° Alternatives: Performance and certainty cannot deal with the transpersonal. Acceptability could compromise authenticity. Understanding cannot deal with what is beyond human understanding. Autonomy would run counter to the transpersonal quality. Selflessness is not a necessity for this process.

The 2° pressure is Autonomy which drives the chooser to trust and act upon their own deep inner sense of what is right and good, even if that conflicts with personal preferences, social expectations, established rules or analyses.

2° Alternatives: Performance is not the issue. Certainty does not apply because correctness is assumed. Acceptability could be counter-productive. Understanding cannot determine the choice. Selflessness is unnecessary because the choice need not serve others. Well-being functions as the 1° pressure.

Well-Being drives transcendence & Autonomy drives commitment.

PH'7: Capability Enhancement Methods

This Principal Typology has been provisionally formulated but not fully worked out at this point in time. It is therefore inappropriate to attempt to determine the influence of psychosocial pressures.

Conclusion

Although some Types may not have been formulated correctly in all aspects, the general level of agreement is striking and it seems reasonable to conclude that the following pattern has emerged:

This suggests that the relationship between this pressure pattern and the unfolding dualities found in Principal Typologies needs explanation and deserves investigation.
