Principles of Arena Formation

Arenas

To this point, a Domain's Primal Need is met by the Domain's fundamental triplet. The key factors determining the quality of delivery of the Need by the triplet lies within Level-6 of the Primary Hierarchy which contains the Domain controls in the form of Optimizers and the derived Spiral Complex.

As postulated earlier, the Arenas must contribute to delivering the primal need in a different fashion. This difference must now be examined.

Linkage with Domains Above & Below

The use of the Arenas appears to involve the controlling level (PH•L6) of the next lower Domain which is under the pressure of autonomy. The L6 function is qualified by a term (highighted below) deriving from the relevant Domain.

So:

Arenas of Achieving (PH'1Q•) are foci for managerial learning (PH7L6).

Arenas of Knowing (PH'2Q•) are foci for explicable choice (PH1L6)

Arenas of Depicting (PH'3Q•) are foci for discriminating judgements (PH2L6)

Arenas of Individualizing (PH'4Q•) are foci for self-representation (PH3L6)

Arenas of Associating (PH'5Q•) are foci for group identification (PH4L6)

Arenas of Governing (PH'6Q•) are foci for political significance (PH5L6)

Arenas of Effectiveness (PH'7Q• are foci for masteredparadigms PH6L6)

It seems that the G1-base of the next higher Domain's effect (PsH•), which also operates under the pressure of autonomy, activates the Domain's Arenas.

So:

Questioning (G1) within Making Discoveries PsH2 activates
Arenas of Achieving (PH'1Q•)

Evolution (G1) within Changing Systems PsH3 activates
Arenas of Knowing (PH'2Q•)

Attention (G1) within Manifesting Character PsH4 activates
Arenas of Fitting In (PH'3Q•)

Exchanges (G1) within Creating Discourse PsH5 activates
Arenas of Individualizing (PH'4Q•)

Responsibility (G1) within Realizing Values PsH6 activates
Arenas of Associating (PH'5Q•)

Hope (G1) within Contributing Expertise PsH7 activates
Arenas of Governing (PH'6Q•)

Activity (G1) within Producing Results PsH1 activates
Arenas of Effectiveness (PH'7Q•

The finding that both links are driven by the psychosocial pressure for Autonomy (projecting from RL6 originally) leads to the conclusion that Arenas define spheres where autonomy is highly significant in our personal lives.

Refining the Primal Need

The question to be asked now is:

What is different about the handling of the Primal Need within the Arenas in comparison to using the Domain's fundamentals or Spiral-Tree?

And then there is a subsidiary question:

Do Domain controls emerging from the Spiral still apply to the Arenas?

We can use the linkages described above and buttress this with findings from inquiries into the Arenas of Association (PH'5Q). It appears that while the PH5-Domain references any and every social group, the Arenas handle special social groups where responsibility (work-in-role)and social identification come to the fore: as in Q1-family households, Q2-organizations, & Q3-disciplines. Of course the Domain's controls still apply in that it remains essential to make others understand (PH'5CsH) and to discuss shared realities (PH'5CsHK).

Looking at all the Arenas now and using the linkages from above.

PH'1Q Arenas of Achieving, being a response to questioning and involving improved capability, can generate momentum. This momentum will be subject to pressures for performance and management expectations (PH'1CsHK) .

PH'2Q Arenas of Knowing, being a response to the evolution of situations and involving choice, generate conclusions that may be temporary. Conclusions can still be treated as conjectures pressing for certainty and calling for evaluation (PH'2CsHK).

PH'3Q Arenas of Fitting In, being a response to attention and involving judgements, probably lead to orientations. Orientations can still be determined by acceptability and subject to criticism (PH'3CsHK).

PH'4Q Arenas of Individualizing, being a response to exchanges with others and involving self-representation in the form of self-images or a self-concept, enable self-preservation. Self-preservation remains subject to pressures to sustain well-being and adapt (PH'4CsHK).

PH'5Q Arenas of Communication, being a response to responsibility and involving social identification, generate social entities built via work-in-role. Work in those entities involves pressures for understanding and contests over the shared reality (PH'5CsHK).

PH'6Q Arenas of Governing, being a response to hope in dimensions of political significance, generate benefits. The benefits depend on pressing for autonomy and require legitimation (PH'6CsHK).

PH'7Q Arenas of Effectiveness, being a response to necessary activity and involving mastering a paradigm, generate confidence. Confidence must still be handled selflessly and competence regularly refreshed (PH'7CsHK).

Based on the above, we have now some understanding of Arenas at the Domain level. The next task is to reach the framework level and identify each of the 7 Arenas in each of the 7 Primary Domains. The goal is not to develop those frameworks here in the Architecture Room, but simply to know what frameworks need to be developed. For now, what is known will be posted in the Taxonomy Notes section, and in due course after much study, details will be posted as a Satellite.

The natural place to start is with Domains where some knowledge has already been gained. The PH'2Q-Knowing Arenas meets that criterion. Conclusions from there can then be applied and tested against the much more developed PH'5Q-Associating Arenas.
