Development v Accommodation

Approach

Willingness is relevant to every endeavour and is the same in every case. However, the various levels of willingness, that is to say the fundamental ways that willingness manifests, feel and look so different. And while hierarchy has been argued, stratification was not immediately obvious.

So it is no wonder that conventional researchers have never lumped willingness forms together, much less ordered them.

Having identified 7 levels, we now need to dichotomize these in a distinctive way. THEE principles indicate that there should be a sharp polarizing distinction between odd-numbered and even-numbered levels. This ubiquitous polarity is called the oscillating duality.

Sometimes this duality is obvious, but that was not the case here. In determining the oscillation, I looked closely at:

a) how activation of the element is determined
and
b) what impact the element has on oneself and others.

See Background Notes below.

With that guidance, a picture emerged that was more complex than in other primary hierarchies, although perhaps the present findings suggest that those should be revisited. Note: Closed The provisional formulation used in the Architecture Room studies for willingness-PH7 was association v dissociation.

Findings

The oscillation is between:

Personal Development in the odd-numbered levels
and
Social Accommodation in the even-numbered levels.

In short:

L1: Trying is individualistic, about self-starting and supports self-development.

L2: Believing is social and enables finding one's place amongst others.

L3: Facing is a personal and subjective matter and fosters self-development.

L4: Participating involves accepting the nature and culture of a particular group.

L5: Risking is a matter of personal daring and intrinsic to the adventures of life.

L6: Learning involves a receptivity, dependency and adapting to others who know more.

L7: Trusting involves and openness that can enable personal growth and development.

Elaboration

While these labels confirm the oscillation, they could be challenged. To clarify the situation, it is possible to look in more detail at the following:

  1. What is the effect on the self?
ODD: Personal development leads to becoming & self-expansion
EVEN: Social accommodation leads to belonging & self-consolidation

  2. What mental processes are involved?
ODD: Personal development is subjective & imaginative
EVEN: Social accommodation is rational & objective

  3. What is the social vector?
ODD: Personal development is attractive & unifies others
EVEN: Social accommodation is divisive & accepts others

  4. How are boundaries with others managed?
    ODD: Personal development transcends boundaries
    EVEN: Social accommodation respects boundaries

Personal Development: The odd-numbered levels see the individual as unique. Whether it is starting to try-L1, consenting to face reality-L3, taking a risk-L5 or developing trust-L7, a person is essentially alone in the moment of choice, and about to expand their self on the basis of internal work that is necessarily subjective and uses the imagination. This is a state of becoming that attracts others and can unify, even if the outcome is never predictable. Here boundaries are transcended to create a shared spirit and personal growth.

Social Accommodation: The even-numbered levels reveal the individual as necessarily choosing in a rational objective way to engage with an existing system. Whether it is adopting a belief (L2), welcoming participation (L4) or pursuing learning (L6), the result is a consolidation of the self within a recognizable group and a specifically valued framework. This calls for belonging via associations that divide people, while accepting that others also need to associate. Here boundaries are respected because they provide for order and progress.

Unwillingness: Willingness is evidently about expanding one's potential for achievement (becoming) while consolidating and stabilizing that potential within a social framework (belonging). The earlier analysis of unwillingness can be interpreted as failures of these two poles. Failure in an odd level leads to a hollowing out of "the personal"—a weakening of becoming. Failure in an even level leads to a hollowing out of "the social"—a weakening of belonging.

Combined with the development of properties earlier, this finding of a powerful oscillating pattern confirms the earlier checks that identified the Primary Hierarchy of Willingness (PH7) within THEE.
