Pattern in All Principal Spirals

Explanation

As explained, the Spiral with its reordering and its Modes is logically the suitable structure for understanding the Root Projection to the Principal Typology. This Topic provides an overview of all the current names for Spirals and their modes, together with:

  1. the corresponding Root Level as determined for the Types and confirmed for all Spirals in principle.
  2. the influence of two Root Levels in all Spirals as identified by observation in two cases (PH'1C and PH'6C), and now generalized and provisionally confirmed for all.

The Spirals are taken one by one starting from PH'1C. A very brief explanation of what they are about is offered and a simple Table provided. Formal names vary in the degree of confidence as previously explained.

At the Topic's end, all Spirals are lined up so names can be compared. The current duplication of some names is due to piecemeal investigations, and should be removed to avoid confusion.

PH'1C: Strengthening MANAGEMENT

This Spiral is about progressively strengthening the management needed for achievement. The foundation is taking action (φ1) that needs to move from incrementalism to dynamism.

The Cycle-1 watershed in development is the use of values and objectives knowing that there will be prompt action-RL1 based on genuine consensus, accountability and an ability to settle differences. Cycle-2 uses inquiry-RL2 values to increase certainty about choices and constrain activities.

PH'2C: Establishing CONJECTURES

This Spiral is about progressively establishing the conjectures that create a claim for knowledge. The foundation is hypothesis-generation (φ1) that needs to move from plausibility through verification to falsification.

The Cycle-1 watershed in inquiry-RL2 emerges from empirical observations conducted in the light of plausible explanations, analytic explorations, and paradoxes. These should verify expected regularities. Cycle-2 introduces a change-RL3 influence to increase the acceptability of the knowledge that is emerging.

PH'3C: Advancing DEPICTION

This Spiral is about progressively enlarging the depiction needed for discrimination. The foundation is causal connections (φ1) that need to move from being evident via manipulation to enabling prediction.

The Cycle-1 watershed in change-RL3 is a dynamic representation that captures causal interactions, structural integrity and opposing views. Cycle-2 introduces an experience-RL4 influence to ensure that depiction and predictions are not too disturbing or distressing.

PH'4C: Strengthening A SENSE of SELF

This Spiral is about progressively developing a self as part of the personal maturation needed for individuality. The foundation is emotional being (φ1) that needs to grow from egotistic sensitivity via interpersonal responsiveness to empathic attunement.

The Cycle-1 watershed in experience-RL4 is a sensing oneself, others and the situation in the context of emotional states, social demands, and personal needs. Cycle-2 introduces a communication-RL5 influence to enable guidance and encouragement from others.

PH'5C: Consolidating A SHARED REALITY

This Spiral is about progressively sharing and so establishing a reality that enables and strengthens association and group cohesion. The foundation is conceptual accounts (φ1) that need to grow from informal exchanges through popular expositions to meaningful discourse.

The Cycle-1 watershed in communication-RL5 is found in specific detailed applications of ideas, following their logical development and general dissemination. Cycle-2 introduces a purpose-RL6 influence so that each member may maintain their autonomy.

PH'6C: Maturing POLITICS

This Spiral is about the progressive maturation of politics so that governance can allow autonomy (freedom/liberty) for its group members while simultaneously ensuring justice and support for the group as a whole. The foundation is a pluralism(φ1) of members (or sub-groups in a society) where the dominance by a small clique over time leads to devolution of power, greater fairness, and participation by all.

The Cycle-1 watershed in purpose-RL6 is found in the resolution of social issues via reason and consultation, in the context of individual self-reliance and the rule of law. Cycle-2 introduces a willingness-RL7 influence so that each member must engage responsibly with political issues.

PH'7C: Increasing EFFECTIVENESS

This Spiral is about progressively developing effectiveness in order to support competence. The foundation is preoccupation (φ1) that needs to grow from a natural intuition to a sophisticated reflective awareness.

The Cycle-1 watershed in willingness-RL7 is found in forming good habits through iteration with small improvements, supported by education and association with like-minded others, as well as constant preoccupation. Cycle-2 introduces an action-RL1 influence so that real-world application and feasibility issues are not neglected.

ClosedName Duplication:

Sometimes similar names preserves the Level and Root correspondence:

Dialectic at φ3 in PH'1C and PH'2C: both Communication-RL5.
Individual(ist) at φ3 in PH'6C and PH'4C: both Communication-RL5.
Rationalist at φ4 in PH'1C and PH'6C: both Purpose-RL6.

Sometimes they do not:

Empiricist at φ5 (Inquiry-RL2) in PH'1C
versus
Empirical at φ4 (Purpose-RL6) in PH'2C

Formal at φ5 (Inquiry-RL2in PH'2C
versus
Logical at φ6 (Willingness-RL7) in PH'5C.
