Affinities & Antagonisms
Revealed Features
THEE's Typology Essences Table (TET) reveals many features of practical importance that were previously difficult to observe:
- antagonism between certain approaches;
- affinities between certain approaches;
- how to enhance the compulsion to be ;
- two contrasting sets of approaches according to diagonals.
These have practical implications because antagonism & affinity emerge in social life as social biases or attitudes and as rival groups or factions.
Approaches in diagonally opposite quadrants are fiercely antagonistic; while approacheswithin the same quadrant show an affinity.
Antagonisms
The Hi-Benefit / Hi-Awareness Quadrant
containing and approaches is reflection-oriented. Both approaches require careful thoughtfulness, a personal matter, and the fulfilment of good intentions (teleological).
Whereas the Lo-Benefit / Lo-Awareness Quadrant
containing and approaches, is sensitive to enforcement-oriented: Both approaches require consideration of group sentiment and what the group is likely to demand, a social matter. This is then taken to be what is right (deontological).
The Hi-Benefit / Lo-Awareness Quadrant
containing the approach is focused on : i.e. oriented to developing personal advantage via benefits of group membership and also ensuring group support by simultaneously benefiting the group. This is a teleological approach.
Whereas the Lo-Benefit / Hi-Awareness Quadrant
containing the and approaches is focused on : i.e. oriented to developing the strength of each person. Being strong as an individual is the right thing to do for self and society i.e. deontological; while using strength to seek what is right and good is teleological.
Affinities
Affinity naturally exists between approaches sharing a quadrant. The extreme approach is viewed as more powerful and more compelling than the central approach. This diagram reveals:
- a greater compulsion to be ethical in each quadrant via moving centrifugally;
- a commensurate strengthening of opposition between antagonistic quadrants;
- two commonalities: amongst approaches; and amongst the inner circle approaches.
In the Hi-Benefit / Hi-Awareness Quadrant...
In the Lo-Benefit / Hi-Awareness Quadrant...
- Now: recognize the approach duality.
